AbstractThis article aims to discuss the relationship between Herodotus and Thucydides. New scholarly trends date the composition of Herodotus’Historiesto 413 BC, or even later, against high chronology of 431, and suggest Herodotus’ use of Thucydides’ narrative. Herodotus’ debt to Thucydides has been suggested by scholars either cautiously or boldly. This examination will show cases where Herodotus is alluding to events of the Peloponnesian War or even responding to Thucydides’ narrative. In fact, anachronisms, presentisms, and allusions to Thucydides’ text can be found throughout Herodotus’ narrative. L’étude du seul traité irlandais sur la consécration des églises (xie siècle) et sa comparaison avec les sacramentaires et ordines du viiie siècle permettent de relever des analogies avec la liturgie gallicane, mêlée de quelques éléments orientaux. La découverte d’un schéma de dédicace dans le ms 477 d’Angers (ixe siècle), d’origine bretonne (Landévennec) et d’influence irlandaise, confirme quant à elle les singularités du rituel irlandais : inscription d’un double alphabet latin sur le sol ; utilisation de psaumes de malédiction ; circumambulation de l’église en récitant des psaumes graduels. Iʿtibārī Concepts in Suhrawardī : The Case of Substance

Abstract Shihāb al-Dīn al-Suhrawardī (d. 587/1191) famously criticised the central concepts of Avicennian metaphysics as merely mind-dependent (or iʿtibārī) notions. This paper aims to show that despite his critique, Suhrawardī held that these concepts are meaningful, indeed necessary for human cognition. By the same token, it is argued that their re-emergence in Suhrawardī’s ishrāqī metaphysics is not a matter of incoherence. Although the paper’s findings can be generalised to hold of all iʿtibārī concepts, mutatis mutandis, our focus is on the concept of substance, mainly because of the importance of the concept of ‘dusky substance’ in ishrāqī metaphysics.

Written records of confession provide exceptional insight into private histories of women and the gender dynamics that shaped them. The sacrament of confession entailed an implicit inequality between men and women, given that the priest was considered to be shrouded in divine power while the penitent had to submit herself to his moral authority. Nevertheless, confession also offered women the opportunity to express themselves and to discuss and understand their spiritual concerns.
